Types of Health Insurance in the USA

Health insurance is a program that pays for your expenses that are related to medicine. This insurance gives us protection against our medical expenses. It includes insurance for losses from accidents, disability, death, etc. The cost of medical care without coverage can be very costly in the USA. There are a few types of health insurance in the USA.

  • Health maintenance organizations (HMOs)
  • Exclusive provider organizations (EPOs)
  • Point-of-service(POS) plans
  • Preferred provider organizations (PPOs)

Health maintenance organizations (HMOs)

The cost of this type of health insurance is lower than any other. They make sure to help you choose a primary health provider from their network. Health insurance in the USA costs so much generally so this plan is really helpful. In this plan, they will help you provide a specialist from the network. You must stay in the network. The PCP they give you becomes your home for all kinds of medical care. In HMOs, you can connect with limited doctors and specialists within the network. This plan is the gateway to every other plan. This is the more managed type of health insurance plan in the USA. And you can always change your primary care doctor to any other doctor of your choice.

Exclusive provider organizations (EPOs)

This plan doesn’t require a referral from the network. No primary care provider is ever needed for any kind of access to the specialist. I’m this health insurance type you can get state-wide and sometimes nationwide access to doctors. But it doesn’t cover your expenses out of the network. Most of the time it didn’t give you coverage out of the network unless it’s an emergency. Some EPO plans look like PPOs but the doctors and hospitals are where the plans are different. You get an exclusive network in this plan of high-quality doctors and specialists.

Point-of-service plans(POS)

This health insurance has both features of HMO and EPO. The cost of this type of health insurance in the USA is lower like PPO and this is a small plan just like HMO.

This is a really helpful plan and they get to know and tell you everything from home base. Just like other types of insurance plans, you will get more charged if you need a specialist outside of the network. You will be responsible for filing any claim for yourself. So this is how POS works.

Preferred provider organization (PPOs)

PPO Offers you a large number of doctors and hospitals so you have a lot to choose from. You can see a specialist outside the network but you have to pay more from out-of-pocket. In some cases, you have greater access to medical treatments than HMO plan offers. You have to make a pre-defined payment known as copay or coinsurance each time you visit a doctor or specialist. It has different types of plans for diff types of people.

There are so many health insurance providers out there including United Health Care, National General, Allied Coverage, First Quote Health and many more.
